Sloughi Club United Kingdom

(deutsche + englische Version)

from Maria Goodman

Ch.Akbar of Mumtaz-I-Javanadi Kamet

Date of Birth 06/07/77
Sire: Bengali Ouled Nails
Dam: Dutch & Belgian Ch.Bluedon`s Zaherit Eltofah

The Sloughi Club in the UK has been in existence since 1997 and was founded by Maria Goodman, although the Sloughi has been in the UK since the 1970's, original imports coming from Holland.

The Sloughi Club now has over sixty members and the original bloodlines of Mrs Jeanny Braakman are behind many of the English dogs. Jacky Saunders was the original importer of the foundation stock for the UK and is still active in the breed today, along with Sue Harper and Rodney Read they show under the Kamet kennel name.

For many years no imported bloodlines came to the UK and the Sloughi became almost a forgotten breed. In 1997, Maria Goodman approached Sue Harper for a bitch in the hope of importing a male from a kennel in France. The bitch arrived, but sadly the male did not happen, as the family became rather attached to him and decided to keep him so she had to look elsewhere.

During this time Pam Marston-Pollock had imported a male Sloughi dog Murad Schuru-esch-Schams, to be followed by a bitch from the same kennel Taslima Schuru-esch-Schams.And so the club began to grow, with a very hard working committee. Maria applied to the Kennel Club to register the Sloughi Club and had to prove to them that indeed there was a call for such a club and that the breed would be well supported.

Maria then imported Ullan Kaheela De Moreau from Mdme. Ermine Moreau Sipiere in the US. And so the genepool grew. People began to see these beautiful dogs appearing at the shows, seminars were held with video and photographs, a breed booth was set up at Crufts dog show (this won an award from the Kennel Club) to help people get to know this most elegant of sighthound breeds.

The club now has a newsletter that comes out twice a year, a website for its members, seminars when neccassary and although the Sloughi does not yet enjoy Championship status , many shows schedule classes for the breed including Crufts. Entries average around fifteen and rising.

The Sloughi Club will be holding its first show in June 2001 and all Sloughi fanciers are welcome to come and visit us all here in the UK, whether to exhibit or not. We would love to see you.

We hope the Sloughi Club grows in strength and that we can learn from people overseas more and more about the breed.
