Remarks to the gait of the Sloughi

by Liz Gross von Hübbenet

The Sloughi uses the trot as the most frequent kind of action.. According to the intended use, the conditions of life and the living space, the best Sloughi-gait is an appropriate one. This appropriateness is nice and shows itself in an easy light-footed style of motion. One must know that only a single trot-phase is shown at exhibitions. It is the phase of attention and sight shortly before the gait changes into gallop, e.g., to hunt the visible game. Now like a well grown horse, the thrust from the hind quarters leads to a natural erectness, by which the head is kept erected and the trot, also of heavy male. dogs, looks like-floating. Well grown (or formed) here means a moderate angulation of the hind quarters. This describes the action-trot. Now, the Sloughi sees something of interest and puts up its head.

When persistently trotting the Sloughi keeps its head nearly horizontal to the dorsal-line with its neck stretched but in a relaxing attitude. A too high raised head is too strenuous in the long run and therefore not appropriate to a persistent trot.

The correct anatomy of the classical and from the norm demanded type of a Sloughi enables it to cover far distances light-footed and without tiredness.
