History of the origin and rise of "Sloughi World"

Sloughi World is the only Internet-Magazine for the Sloughi-Breed
and also the only Magazine which appears regularly for this Breed.
It came into being by private initiative, that has set aim to collect
information as much as possible about Sloughis and above all to
publish. The tenth edition is going to be published in December.
Our Readers are international. Interested in it are Sloughi-Admires,
other Sighthound-people, new Owners and Friends of different Dog-Races.
But one after the other. Sloughi World is mainly performed by two
people at the moment who are supported by contributions of many
Sloughi-Owners and interested Friends of this Race.
These people are Oliver Eberhardt, that means me, and Liz Gross
von Hübbenet.

Here Liz is telling
her own story:
When looking for a hound that would suit me I thumbed through many
different books and so I discovered the Sloughi. Its appearance
was in accordance with may favoured dog-type - a Hound.
By chance there lived a Saluki-Breeder in my village. We called
on him to ask for the address of a Sloughi-Breeder, who had a liking
for breeding them. By no means I wanted a hound from a big-breeder.
I should never have dreamt of a corresponding Breeder living only
15 minutes away from my home. I was so excited and happy that I
immediately phoned and we at once could come to see him! And then
I saw for the first time in my life Sloughis. The Sloughis of the
"Nuri al Baida-Kennel". I was overwhelmed. Never before
have I seen something more beautiful. Particularly an eight-month-old
male-dog I was taken with. He was living with his semi-sister and
his mother together with the Breeder-Couple. The young male-dog,
called Tabrik, which means the blessed, was dreamlike to be looked
at. A strong, elegant male-dog with dark eyes and an impressive
black mask. At the following walk together with the Breeder-Couple
and their three Sloughis I received my first lesson on the Sloughi.
I learned general facts about their obedience, their behaviour to
other dogs and among themselves, and their conduct to people, about
their original living-space and about the characteristics of the
origin of Sloughis of this Kennel. On my first day with Sloughis
I didn't know what will develop out of it. But now I would like
to tell you something of the beginning.
Four months after my first meeting Tabrik I owned him. Because,
he wanted it!! Six month further I owned Ussamal, the "Companion"
- too, his semi-brother whom I chose from the meanwhile new litter.
One year later the Kennel could not be kept any longer because of
professional changes. This could have meant the end of the valuable
Genpool of this numerically small Sloughi-population. It was and
still is the unique bringing together of the bloodlines, which has
created the wonderful harmonic breed-type with Nuri al Baida. I
would never want to abandon exactly this nice and old Sloughi-Type.
The Breeder and myself formed a Kennel-partnership. Today I keep
on the breed "Nuri al Baida" with the same lasting ideals
and my husband's support. And the I got to know Oliver and Stephan
Eberhardt. They were interested in our Sloughis and chose the beautiful
bitch Vahdani from the V-litter of Tamri Nuri al Baida. This acquaintance
intensified and led to the co-operation at the Online-Magazine "Sloughi

More than 10 years ago I saw the first Sloughi when I visited some
friends. I didn't know the name of the breed and neither did I know
where they came from. The only thing I know was that if I wanted
a hound it would have to be one of this breed. The powerful elegance
of their motion, the expression of the big and dark and looking
like coloured eyes and their gentle character held myself spellbound.
This herd of eight Sloughis of Tunisian-Algerian origin impressed
myself very much. Some of them were always near me and still no
one was pushful like I knew it from our Boxer and similar species.
The accompanied you but never got on your nerves. The more I was
amazed when I saw the two-year-old child having his after-dinner-nap
among the dogs. In those days already, the attraction of the Sloughis
was so strong, that I never could let them out of my sight.

Years passes away without being able to keep hounds. While attending
school I would have no time for them, and clearly, I myself alone
couldn't have one. Fortunately my brother was also fascinated for
this breed, so I knew the day will come and it will work out. We
subscribed to different Sighthound-magazines and bought some breeding-books
of the DWZRV to collect information about this breed. There were
some famous Sighthound-books already in the book-shelves. The Internet
was not very much used in those days. Pedigrees were studied, Photos
looked at and it was clear into which direction it should go. One
day we saw an advertisement in the magazine "Unsere Windhunde",
the Magazine of the DWZRV, with a beautiful portrait of a Sloughi-bitch,
Tamri Nuri al Baida, that had exactly the soft look which we liked.
I didn't dare to phone there so my brother did instead. We
thought we wouldn't get a Sloughi. Sure, we were too late, nobody
"knows" us, and we had no experience with Sighthounds…
Three weeks later we sat in the whelping box and we soon know which
bitch we should own. Also now I do not regret the decision, as Vahdani,
which we chose fulfils all characteristics I anticipate. She is
a most beautiful, a complete type and above all a bitch in good
health in which a harmonic body and a light-footed motion are joined.
She is charming and sensitive and very adaptable. She is a proud,
intelligent and a sensible bitch, just a strong personality.
As Vahdani is an ideal-typical bitch, whose Pedigree unites very
old and valuable bloodlines, we plan a litter in spring of 2004
in our Kennel "Rafik el Amen" - the Faithful Companion
-. "Rafik el Amen" is an other story about which I would
like to writhe at length some other time. For us as breeders in
the early stages we think it absolutely necessary to visit different
kennels and their progeny to talk about it detailed with the breeders
and owners. Up to now my brother an myself have visited 10 different
kennels in different countries, who breed Sloughis of varied bloodlines.
But now let's return to our actual topic "Sloughi World".

We exhibit, have Vahdani partake at Coursing and we collect information
about the breed and the breeders. I started to establish the first
homepage about our bitch. From this page "the house of Sloughi"

came into being, and upon this www.sloughi-world.de
followed and ended with www.rafik-el-amen.de
.
Once in a year we perform a traditional Meeting of the friends
of Nuri al Baida Sloughis, mostly in the form of a large Exhibition
in an attractive surroundings to see each other and to converse
extensively. On this exhibition in 2000 one Sloughi-Magazine was
sold, which was only sporadically published in those days. The reduction
of the Sloughi on the mere title, other achievements and overwhelming
with flattery annoyed me. A Sloughi lives with me all seven days
of the week an I hope for many years. Title and achievements are
"nice" but do not describe a Sloughi and the living together
with it.
So the idea to make a different and better Sloughi-Magazine came
up which many Sloughi-Owners at home and abroad can participate.
The Sloughi is observed in its totality, also cultural, which also
enclose its original living spaces. The archives are very useful
for the Sloughi-friend at any time and contain a great number of
photos. Here my ability in the Webdesign was offered and combined
with the Internet the "Sloughi World" was born. Since
then Sloughi-World is published three times a year and the popularity
is growing continually. We publish funny but also thoughtful texts,
about Arts and topics of the day, appointed days of performances.
Beyond that we publish kynological articles, reports from countries
of origin or we present topical Photo-Slide-Shows.
Thus a broad picture of the Sloughis comes into being gradually.
Many texts are translated into the English language.
That is why Sloughi-World links Sloughi-friends in the whole world.
