Follow up the story of two Sloughi-admirers
in a "Portrait of a Passion" with me, which is told
by Cornelia Riedel as follows. The author renounces in this
brief summary consciously with the achieved titles of the
hounds, as there will be many details on the homepage very
soon.
It all began in March 1972 at Wiesbaden, when Ilse Pfeiffer
got her first Sloughi. This was El Ahtal van klein Vossenburg,
raised in Holland. It supposed to be - only - a family-hound.
But all of a sudden Ilse was in the middle of the occurrence:
With the hounds of the Sloughi-enthusiasts of this time about
the Schritt-family and other and admirers "Eshak"
did his first Sloughi-training-races. Successfully - and soon
the permission for racing and coursing was obtained.
1974, already incurably stricken by the Sloughi-fever, Chaif
Schuru Esch Schams came to stay with the family. This red-sand-coloured,
elegant male-dog influenced Ilse's imagination of a Sloughi
very much. Not only at exhibitions but also at races he was
rather successful. Among other things he became Association-Federal-and
UICL-Winner. 1979 he was Vice-World-Winner in Bern just behind
the also red-sand-colour: red Ch. Malik from France. When
in 1983 Ilse became the Owner with all rights of Chaif's daughter
Promesa (from the Tunisian-Algerian Allasha Habib el Tunis)
she had the name El Ahtal for her breeding patented in 1984
at Wiesbaden. Promesa became the ancestress of the kennel.
Her colour originating from her father goes "like a red
thread" through all litters so far. The A-litter succeeded
soon in February 1985 after the French male-dog Ch. Sahel,
a son of Malik. The litter 1/1 was easy to overlook! Amira,
an immovable, friendly, compact grown bitch remained with
the breeder. The also red-sand-coloured brother, Ch. Amir
(v. Tettenborn) was as well as Ch. Amira presented at exhibitions
and races.
In January 1987 the 3/2 B-litter came from Promesa and the
son of Sahel, MCh. Shaarawi el Djerid, also having Tunisian-Algerian
blood. The expectations were confirmed - as above all the
unforgettable Ch. Badira with her tranquil character, originated
from her father, won numerous titles and prizes. The Achievement-Certificate
and the Championship for Beauty and Performance of this bitch
will remain worth striving for the El ATHALs. More about the
highly elegant brother CH. Badin later on. The sisters Badira
and Baya (Owner of both: Ilse) took part at many races with
strong competitors. At the end of their careers each of them
had completed 40 official races with Victories and also being
well placed. The C-litter came in May 1991 from Ch. Amira
after Ch. Badin. More about it later on.
So Ilse took her Sloughis from the beginning not only to
exhibitions but also to Races and Coursings, to keep up the
original qualities of this race. Yet, she knows quite well
the spites of the "Sloughi as a Racing-hound" in
the classical sense. Her general commitment in the Association
was honoured with the golden Badge of Merit by the DWZRV.

To the end of the 1980s at the nearby Mainz
My first experiences with hounds I collected with a lively, mad
for hunting, smooth-haired Foxterrier, a real challenge!
To the same time, once and again, I joined up with fascinating pictures
of sighthound-like hunting-hounds in the scientific literature in
my occupation as an archaeological restorer.

Oswald, Figure Types . (Depictions on the Roman Terra Sigillata
)
Kurt Lotterhos, many members of our Association
will still remember him, attracted my attention to the nearby
situated race-course of Darmstadt which I visited now and then.
Above all I was delighted with the smooth-haired sighthounds
and their strong and soft movement.
After visits to different breeders I also got to know Ilse
whose kennel just had the 3/3 C-litter. We liked very much
the cheerful Amira and the high-legged Badin, and so we soon
chose the gentle, red-sandcoloured Chaira with the totally
black face out of the three bitches. To this very day she
remained our unending jolly "Daniela Düsentrieb".
Her sister Chaffija stayed with Ilse who led her to the International
Championship among others. Like his sister CH. Chajal (Bravin'
was successful at S+L performances.

Cornelia Riedel with from left- E`Buneya el Djerid, Dido,
D`Juba and mother Chaira el Ahtal. |
With Chaira we had our first nice experiences, sometimes little
less nice, in our Sighthound-community.
I got a member of the DWZRV and SLAG (the French Club for Az, Sl,
Ga) and took up contact to my Group of the Land in the Association
(LG Baden-Kurpfalz), and take part in their Membership-meetings.
Our regular visits to France with their very old breeding-tradition
of the Sloughi broaden our view on the race in its diversity.
(Training)-Courses of the VDH and other Institutions are offered
and attended and help with the further education on breeding.
1993 we visited Rosy Bächtiger (el Djerid) whose E-litter were
just born. We collected further information about the Sloughi. I
didn't think of a third hound. I was very glad when I was presented
with the little black-coated bitch E'Buneya as a wedding-gift by
my husband. Since then she is the sympathetic boss of our little
party.
The enthusiasm for the Sloughi grew and so Ilse joined logically
into the Breeding-partnership with me in 1994. The breeding-address
was remove to Mainz . But now Ilse doesn't work as much as before
1996 the D'litter followed from CH. Chaira and Ramadij Schuru Esch
Schams with blood-connection to the old lines. The 4/2 whelps were
raised and looked after jointly by Chaira and Buneya.
The lively redsand-coloured Dido stayed with us and she soon
showed us what her passion was - she brought very special racing-titles
to our kennel. Her brother MCh. Dja'far (Fam. Knudsen), too,
is a successful coursing-runner. (Long ago he already got our
internal Certificate of Achievement). Together with his brother
MCh. Djamil (Bravin) they both can display many National and
International Championships.
The Dutch Championship of Dja'far is particularly important
to the breeder!

Our breeding pattern is the functional formed Sloughi as defined
by the standard. Besides the presentation of our hounds at exhibitions
and achievement-performances we enjoy the daily walkings and dialogues
with other people and hounds and yet doing clarification work about
sighthound.
Non-cramped dealings with other hound-races is possible for us as
the number of hounds kept is not too large.
 |
Only flying is nicer! Meeting at walking. |
Though originating from Arabic countries, a Sloughi with his "functional
design" cannot deny its nomadic inheritance. Almost classically-progressive
is the prototype, well-balanced proportional and of appropriate
clarity. This model has to be kept up, it is impossible to improve
it.
